Profile of the Islands of Hawaii
The islands of Hawaii were settled
by Polynesians between the 3rd and 7th centuries A.D. and
it wasn't until 1778 that they were discovered by the Europeans,
namely the British Captain James Cook.
In 1886, the famous writer, Mark Twain, visited the islands
and said that they were "the loveliest fleet of islands
that lies anchored in any ocean." Hawaii is made up ofa
137 islands with a total land area of 6,422.6 square miles.
