Profile of the Islands of Hawaii
The islands of Hawaii were settled by Polynesians between the 3rd and 7th centuries A.D. and it wasn't until 1778 that they were discovered by the Europeans, namely the British Captain James Cook.

In 1886, the famous writer, Mark Twain, visited the islands and said that they were "the loveliest fleet of islands that lies anchored in any ocean." Hawaii is made up ofa 137 islands with a total land area of 6,422.6 square miles. From northwest to southeast, the major islands are Ni'ihau, Kaua'i, O'ahu, Moloka'i, Lana'i, Kaho'olawe, Maui, and Hawai'i.
